Education Must Escape Poverty

Education is of much importance, especially in now of days society. Great economic changes are upon the world today and the worth of the dollar increase as does the chances of getting a job becomes harder and harder. Many areas of poverty hold a heavy number of African Americans and Latinos. One Big thing we must realize is education and poverty have a very strong influence ion one another in many ways.  Such as Students from low-income backgrounds are less likely to have access to medical care, which can allow vision, dental, hearing, and other health ailments (including asthma) to go untreated as spoken in the article. Also not only individuals are effected by poverty but communities as well.

I was reminded of one of my favorite movies Coach Carter. Coach Carter gained notoriety in 1999, when coaching the Richmond High School Oilers.  He canceled all of his undefeated team’s games because fifteen of his players had unacceptably poor academic performance. Criticized by players, parents and media, this became known as “The Lock Out”.  In a vision to educate, and inspire, Coach Carter founded The Coach Carter Impact Academy. In the small town nicknamed the Hot Mineral Water City of Texas, that vision is now a reality. Where the population is 6,029, where poverty levels are high, with incomes less than $10,000 a year, Coach Carter’s Impact Academy will open its’ doors in Fall 2013.  Critics have said that it couldn’t be done and it can’t be done.  But with Coach Carter’s “Get It Done” attitude, critics are now saying, “He Got It Done”.

As a Youth Development major I love this quote, sports can change the mind set and also the work ethic of students creating student athletes. “l came to coach basketball players, and you became students. l came to teach boys, and you became men.” I coach a wrestling team and kids of poverty have the perfect outlook on the world to use sports as an outlet for success in their lives. 

Beat the Streets Providence

The reading this week I was not a big fan of it, didn't really grasp my attention also maybe because we only head two sections to read. For what i read basically described school with the youth and many things that contribute and can effect students. I can say the introduction paragraph really gained my attention.

As I read this reading all I could think about was Beat the Streets Providence  which covered many aspects of what was spoke to or targeting. Beat the streets Providence targets these inner city school kids for a series of reasons. Kids are always the generation of the future so they must gain skills or experience to get them in a good position later in life to help the world be a better place. Their can many hardships to grow up as a providence student. The life on the streets, gang banging, robbing, dropping out of school etc. can be an easy fallback plan when school isn't doing it anymore. I'm not saying the school staff isn't doing their job because that would be a lie but their budget to let every student the attention and learning experience is a difficult task. A need for more staff and space for more classrooms, books and supplies will help these students but somethings just cant happen.

Beat the streets wrestling is a great outlet  for children of the middle school age, studies have shown wrestling attracts inner city schools very well maybe for its physical nature and accomplishment reward. The program sets criteria for kids to be in school and to accomplish a grade level, so now the kids you can keep in the program are looking like prospects to graduate high school. Also the sport of wrestling, one of its highest steps you can attain is a college wrestler so now a path is created to college and not to be a superstar on T.V. The sport of wrestling is such a demanding sport mentally and physically that many different characteristics are built like self reliance, will power, hard word, dedication, faith, organized and timely to name a few. Next time you on Google look which of your favorite MMA fighter football players, public figures, movie starts and artists wrestled in their lives. The wrestling community always looks out for one another. To end off Forbes magazine out out a article in their ,magazine why wrestlers are great workers to hire. WHY WRESTLERS MAKE THE BEST EMPLOYEES

The New World

I never really thought of the world that i live in now and how I become this native in a digital world. As far back to my furthest memory I remember when I was about 8 years old me and my family got a computer as a Christmas present But for me to think of a life where I couldn't  have experienced dvd's, instant messaging, cell phones, digital music players, voice mails and video games to name the least I would not be the same person I speak before you. living proof of an age that people must adapt to their environment to "survive" to technological advances. I worked many different jobs in many different field as high labor jobs, retail, customer service, athletics and filing and  I always came across an elder or old fashion person that had to learn something new to them to complete a work task as for me I already know how to work it with no explanation needed. Times have grown so much more with youth, to surprise my eyes to see a 3 year old know how to use an I pad or I phone. As a Digital Native I don't not agree that digital device interferes with my work or studies I am enjoying the movie  The Lorax as I type this blog I normally listen to music it calms my mood. Some of my favorite teachers are digital natives because they use technology we understand and know to make it fun. Videos games created a history of memories and fun filled hours day in and day out for years through my life. Many skills learned which has changed my thought of thinking, looking differently at situation, survival skills, reading skills, history and geography  math skills, reaction time and hand eye coordination. With that explanation only a digital native knows what I speak of but many digital immigrants would not understand that or how that is possible. I want to leave off saying as times change so do people sometimes even evolve just like anything they need to adapt and overcome you must make adjustment with the world. For example teaching they way people have been learning for centuries has been working and we have great leaders, role models, entertainers and so forth. times are changing and the style to attain the attention and continue to make learning a process they can exceed on a large scale that has been happening for centuries must continue.

YOUTH IN ACTION!

Code name Kids Next Door was a popular cartoon on cartoon network, this show, these characters and their missions continually painted an imagine in my head as I read this article "a world where youth hold the power'. Their daily televised missions consisted of taking the fight to the adult to gain freedom and power for all children across the globe. The kids next door teamed up with hundreds of kids stationed all over the world using gadgets, toy based weapons to be recognized individuals. Youth in action a providence organization which seems like it brought the cartoon to real life bringing the youth to lead with their own abilities to bring great change in hope for building a stronger community. Many children in poverty stricken areas wouldn't not get many opportunities as other kids of poverty. Many different aspects of life including school reform, politics, media, organizing,community health, entrepreneurial innovation, and creativity. Children are the future and children will be the ones to grow up and take care of us when we can not. It is brilliant to let the teens run the organization and be apart of every decision, that is something I wish  could of had or just experienced for a day. One powerful sentence I took was we must see the youth as a powerful asset instead of problems. Many adult figures see that the youth is something that needs to be fixed or too lazy, adults must put a hand in to help than correct.
